Secret Asian Man wishes us a Happy May

SAM makes a good point, but at the same time, we have always been viewed as the silent minority, the good minority, the ones who are willing to put our issues and indeed our identity secondary to our immigrant/assimilationist interests. That's not who we are.

I know there's some proverb somewhere that says that the nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered, and let's not rock the boat, but please, let's just once a year, make ourselves noticed.

You know, there's a lot of days in a month. I think that it should be possible to adequately acknowledge bikes and beef and old people and Asian Americans. Especially since I'm not sure exactly how we're supposed to be commemorating bikes and beef and old people.

I'm not usually a big fan of heritage months, because they feel a bit like tokenism. But Asian-Americans get so left out of American history that maybe tokenism is a start.

I agree that having "months" dedicated to certain histories and heritages can be problematic. The common criticism is of Black History Month -- we all should celebrate Black History every month of the year.

The truth is that we don't. Even DURING Black History Month, we get the same tired examples: MLK, Malcolm X, the friggin' peanut. And every other month of the year, we're learning about, thinking about, and celebrating White History.

I think having and celebrating a month for Asian Americans is a start because it encourages us to think beyond the usual rubriks, but it all depends on what we do with it.

Don't just ROCK the boat, SINK THAT FUCKER!!!!

I think that ALL APA activists must take a more radical approach to their issues, instead of constantly expending their energy on just negative media representation. For example, I was soooo disappointed at the lackdasial APA presence at the May 1st "Great American Boycott" march. WTF is that?

Ya'll think that immigration don't mean smack to us?? Guess again!
