A Random Philosophical Thought

... I should be working on my problem set for tomorrow. Instead, I post this thought as a desperate attempt at procrastination. If you could build a computer who's entire purpose was to recognize its own existence, but could not communicate, word process, or even do simple arithmetic, would you consider it more intelligent than IBM Blue (the computer chess genius)?

Neither. Computers are stupid. Transistor gate voltages go high, transistor gate voltages go low. A computer has no more intelligence than a rock ...unless it's running a Windows OS; then its behaviors do tend to indicate the presence of free will in the system.

That's why I swear at my Windows machines; I think they're conscious, and they understand me perfectly. The little bastards...

what good is being able to recognise its own existence if it's incapable of communicating its existence to others?

good question, but at the same time, is intelligence and awareness dependent upon communication? are those who are deaf or paralyzed not self-aware or are not intelligent?

yes. however, we, as people, are so egocentric, and so self-absorbed, that self-awareness alone is not enough to sustain our egos. we are compelled to thrust our "intelligence" upon others because we're so enamored of our own powers of intellect and so sure of the inadequacies of everybody else's powers of intellect that we couldn't stop ourselves from communicating just how self-aware we really are, even if we tried! Even if we are deaf or paralyzed!
