In Memoriam, Daniel Alexander Pirfo, 1986-2005

This message was released today by Cornell president, Jeffrey Lehman.

I am sorry to inform you of the death of one of our students, Daniel A. Pirfo '08. Dan was reported missing on April 25 after having last been seen April 24 in his Mews Hall residence. Despite an extensive search by Cornell University and Ithaca Police Departments and other agencies, his body was not discovered until Tuesday, May 10 and the positive identification did not happen until today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends across the campus. It has been a difficult and stressful time since Dan disappeared, and we are all saddened to have the search end in this tragic way. I recognize that it can be especially difficult to receive this news during this final exam period. Please contact faculty and staff if you feel they can be of help. The Dean of Students Office and the Community Support Team are leading support efforts across campus, including special group discussions with affected students and community members. Individual staff also are available through Counseling and Psychological Services, Cornell United Religious Work or through your college advising office. Peer support is available through EARS. Members of the student community and close friends are planning a gathering to remember Dan in coordination with CURW. Details will be shared when they are known.

Jeffrey S. Lehman
