Gee, I wonder why?

Michelle Malkin reports that that a principal in Salem, Oregon has prevented a student from posting the following picture of her brother:

The student's mother, a blogger, wrote:

Shea proudly printed a picture of her brother and took it to school. The picture she selected is of her brother in Iraq, in combat uniform and holding a gun. Just, a typical picture of a Marine at work in a war zone. Mr. Costa asked the school administration for permission to hang the picture due to the graphic nature of the picture. He was denied, based on the fact that a gun is included in the picture. From there I’m told it was taken to the Salem-Keizer Administrative offices and it was scanned and the gun removed in order for it meet the guidelines of political correctness.

Okay, take a look at that picture again. Administrators are already terrified of school shootings and are trying to discourage school violence. Teachers are already trying to educate kids that violence isn't always the answer -- posting this picture on a school bulletin board would essentially become a liability issue for the school: they would be declaring not only their condoning of gun violence, but would undermine their own authority when trying to stop violent behaviour within the school. They would essentially be sending the message of their tacit approval of people solving their problems with Big Fucking Guns (tm). They would be telling teenagers, already in that risky I-don't-give-a-shit-as-long-as-it-would-make-me-cooler phase that getting a gun is okay, even in some senses, encouraged by their educators. And really, just look at that picture -- I think it speaks for itself! Those guns are bigger than the guys holding it! And that guy on the left -- with the look on his eyes, I wouldn't want him armed with a dull spoon, let alone whatever the hell kind of assault rifle that is! He looks like he just got done with a civilian slaughter!

The picture is a testament to the U.S. Armed Forces ability to reprogram the most good-natured and benign among us into unyielding, demonic hunter-killers. I do not fault the government for this ability; rather, our national security demands that many of us on occasion discard personal morality for amoral, national interest slaughter.

However, the principal was correct in banning this image from honored public display in the school. Unless every Schwarzenegger blood-n-guts movie is being shown during lunchtime, and the school is located in Vieques, Puerto Rico, established to create mercenary killers, the school can not maintain a healthy leaning environment with images of testosterone death under the school seal. It's absurd to think otherwise.

I don't think 'civilian slaughter' was on the participants mind with the picture was snapped, but then again, Spc. Charles Graner was smiling in some of the Abu Ghraib photos too, so who knows....

15, apparently. while I think the girl's age does make things a little murkier, it's not like she was trying to post it in her locker or something, but on a school bulletin board.

i don't know what kind of school she goes to, but the liability issues and the message the school is sending aside, kids quite a bit younger than the girl would also be exposed to this image.
