Arcadequette

I didn't want to believe electroman when he told me about the boys at the arcade. See, I'm a bit of a video game fanatic, and anyone who knows video games knows that Tekken 5 just came out. Yesterday, after a particularly annoying day trying to entertain ourselves at the mall, we decided to swing by the arcade for a few rounds of Tekken 5 before going home. Electroman went to exchange money for tokens, and I just put my bag and jacket down when this guy reaches up around me and plunks two tokens down on the game. See, there is apparently this secret set of rules known as arcadequette. Basically, it's a way to apply a certain amount of order to the chaos of several people all wanting to play one game. Placing your tokens on the ledge of the game means that you want to play the next game, and the loser must rotate out to let the person who placed their tokens on the game to play the winner. Tekken 5 has a really cool system in which you can buy a memory card to save one character that can be customized by earning money whenever you play. However, the game is designed to encourage two-player playing. You earn 1000g for beating a person in two-player mode, compared to only 25g for beating each round in arcade mode. Combine that with the kind of assholes that depend on beating others in videogames to define their own self-esteem, and you end up with these predatory people that actually hang out at the arcade, stalking the game and waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting person. What I simply don't understand is what kind of loser actually spends their time doing this. Do you know how many hours you need to waste in the arcade just waiting for another person to show up? Besides which, the guy yesterday who tried to break up the fun btween me and electroman was a 1st dan player, who had played well over 200 games with his memory cards. He was VERY good -- in contrast, I've only played thirty and am nowhere near as good. He basically just wanted to find more people to beat. And he had no qualms inserting himself into what was obviously a date situation. It's like your best friend just showing up at the restaurant while you're on your first date with a really hot guy, sitting down, and helping herself to some of your garlic bread. Basically, arcadequette is just not. Why not ask someone if you can get a game before just plunking your tokens down? It's a simple question, but are people really so afraid of actual social interaction with the person you're standing less than a foot away from? Well, at least last night both electroman and I saw it as rude immediately. As soon as the guy plunked his tokens down (after electroman had already put a token in), we stepped back, furious. I immediately picked up my stuff, electroman said 'did you want the game? well, alright, here, i've already put in one token'. He then reached over, took one of the guy's tokens, and we both stepped back from the machine. The guy was then forced to put the other token in and play through the arcade mission. Ah, when arcadequette backfires. :)

I'm all for this system of Tekken 5 "arcadequette," as long as this rule is added:

Any player may, at any time, elect to move the match from the virtual arena of the arcade game to the cold, hard pavement behind Sears.

"Hey, he put down his tokens; it's not my fault if he can only do a 'Hunting Hawk' with a video game controller in his hand... and not with one shoved up his..."

This is why I stoped playing in the arcade two years ago.Especially tekken.I never stay long enough to be that good, nor would I even want to, I mean I have a life. Those stalkers take the enjoyment out of playing. And they never leave!!I especially hated the ones who talked shit the whole time you are playing......but I did enjoy seeing their asses handed to them by the local korean tekken master :)
